At Rathfarnham Medical Centre, we understand that many of our patients have similar questions about appointments, prescriptions, and other services.
Below are answers to the most common queries to help you find the information you need quickly.

(Last updated: October 2025)

How do I book an appointment?

You can book online at rathfarnhammedical.ie. Select “Book a Consultation,” choose your preferred doctor, and select the correct option:
Medical Card / Doctor Visit Card – choose “DVC/MC”
Private patient – choose “Private” and follow the steps to payment.
You can also call the practice on 01 493 4122 if you need help.

How do I cancel or reschedule an appointment?

If you booked online, you can cancel or reschedule through the confirmation email or link you received. Appointments must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance for refunds. If booked over the phone or in person, please contact the practice directly to cancel. Repeated missed appointments may result in withdrawal of services.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 12:00pm and 2:00pm – 5:00pm.
Please note:
Nurse-led clinics run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with varying hours.
The clinic does not operate evenings or weekends.

What if I need an emergency appointment?

We offer a small number of emergency appointments each morning and afternoon. If we cannot accommodate you on the same day, you’ll be advised to contact the Out of Hours service. For a serious emergency, call 911 or go directly to your nearest A&E Department.

What if I need to discuss multiple issues?

Standard consultations cover one issue. If you’d like to discuss two or three unrelated issues, please book an Extended Consultation (available online).

Can I register as a new patient?

Yes. To register, please complete the New Patient Registration Form available on our website. Print and complete the form, then post or drop it into the practice. Your application will be reviewed by our GPs, and we’ll contact you once a decision is made. If accepted, you’ll be asked to book a New Patient Appointment online so the doctor can review your medical history.

How can I book a doctor house call?

Doctor House Calls are only available for patients who are within a reasonable distance from the surgery and fall under the following groups: Terminally ill Patients, Nursing Home Patients, Bed Bound Patients

We cannot provide a house call service for those patients who do not fall under these three categories. Lack of transport or bad weather will not be considered for a house call. Small children and infants should always be brought to the surgery and we will do our best to see them promptly. Doctors can provide the required standard of care in a surgery setting, with access to all your medical records and medical equipment.

If a house call is required and you fall under the groups mentioned above: Call the surgery before 10am if possible giving as much detail to determine the most appropriate type of care.
You will then be informed if we are able to provide a house call. We are not always in a position to provide a house call due to staffing. Our responsibility to you is to help you resolve your medical problem; your responsibility is to take all the reasonable steps you can, to enable us to do that.
If you feel you or your relative is too unwell to attend the surgery and requires emergency care, please phone 112 or 999.

What is a General Practitioner (GP)?

A GP is a doctor who provides primary and ongoing healthcare for individuals and families, managing a wide range of health concerns and coordinating specialist care where needed.

Can the doctor give me a referral to a specialist?

Yes. You’ll need to see your GP first to discuss the reason for referral. You can be referred privately (if covered by your insurance) or publicly through the HSE system.

What happens with my medical records?

Your records are securely held by Rathfarnham Medical Centre in both manual and electronic form. They are used only to provide your healthcare and ensure continuity of care. You may request a copy of your records at any time by completing a Medical Record Request Form.

Do you offer vaccinations and other nurse-related services?

Yes. Our Practice Nurse provides cervical screening, travel vaccinations, and other nurse-led services. Please check our website for available appointments.

Do you treat children?

Yes, we provide care for children and families.

Do you have parking and wheelchair access?

Yes. We have wheelchair access and limited parking outside the clinic, with additional on-street parking available nearby.

How do I renew my prescription?

If you have a Medical Card or Doctor Visit Card (DVC), you can complete a prescription request form at reception or submit a request online. Private patients can complete the online Private Prescription Request and pay the prescription fee. A member of our reception team will contact you if a consultation is required before renewal.

My consultant has given me a prescription. What do I do?

If you have any questions about a prescription issued by your consultant, please contact them directly. If you have a medical card and need the prescription sent to your pharmacy under your GMS card, we will need a copy of the consultant’s prescription before we can process it.

Can I request a referral?

All referrals require a consultation with a doctor first. After referral, please follow up directly with the hospital or consultant regarding waiting times or appointments.

The hospital Doctor has ordered investigations, where can I get the results?

Please ring Hospital team for results; we only follow up on investigations ordered by our own doctors here in the practice.

How do I book blood tests?

Blood tests must be ordered by a doctor. Please book a consultation first. If your hospital consultant requires specific blood tests, we can carry these out — please bring the list of required tests. You can book “Consultant Bloods” directly on our website.

I want to book a cervical screening (smear test). How do I do that?

If you are eligible under the Cervical Screening Programme, you can book a “Smear” or “Nurse” appointment online. Private cervical screening is also available — please contact the practice directly. For accurate results, schedule your test between day 10–20 of your menstrual cycle (day 1 is the first day of bleeding).

Can I book blood or urine tests for my child?

Blood tests must be discussed with a doctor first. We can sometimes facilitate older children, but please note our courier does not deliver to paediatric hospitals (Tallaght or Crumlin). You may need to drop the sample to the hospital yourself once taken.

How long will it take to get my test results?

Most blood results are returned within 10 working days, though some may come back sooner. Cervical screening results are issued directly to patients by Cervical Check, typically within 8 weeks. For hospital-based tests or scans, please contact the hospital directly.

What are your consultation fees?

Please see our Fees Page for full details on consultation and service costs.

What services are covered by my Medical Card?

Services covered under the GMS scheme are listed on our Fees Page. Some additional services may incur a private fee.

Are repeat prescriptions or forms charged separately?

Yes. Some non-consultation services have a separate fee — please check the Fees Page or confirm with reception.

Is there a limit on prescription costs?

The HSE Drug Payment Scheme limits the monthly amount you pay for approved medicines. You can find more information and apply directly at HSE Drug Payment Scheme.
