Measuring your blood pressure is an important part of assessing cardiovascular health because raised blood pressure (hypertension) is a very common cause of cardiovascular disease.
It is estimated that one in three people in Ireland suffers from hypertension, so this is a common problem. It is important to note that high blood pressure can only be diagnosed by measuring it, since most people have no symptoms at all, even when their blood pressure is very high.
A 24-hour blood pressure monitor can be obtained through the surgery. Typically, your GP will advise if you need one fitted. This service is used to get a more accurate picture of your blood pressure, as it can be influenced by stress in a clinic setting (“White coat syndrome”), and helps monitor medication effectiveness.
The device is worn for 24 hours while you continue your normal daily activities, and the detailed report is then reviewed by our doctors to help with diagnosis and treatment decisions.
How it works
- A GP or nurse will fit you with a portable monitor and a cuff that goes around your upper arm.
- The device automatically takes blood pressure readings at set intervals, typically every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes at night.
- You will need to wear the device for 24 hours and continue with your normal daily activities, including sleep.
- You may be asked to keep a diary to note down any symptoms or activities.
- The monitor is returned to us the next day for the readings to be analysed.
- The results are used by our doctors to see how your blood pressure changes throughout the day and night and to make treatment decisions, such as adjusting medication.
Along with high cholesterol, hypertension is an easily treatable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Blood pressure measurement is one of the simplest and most effective tests that we have in terms of disease prevention.
