How effective is the HPV vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is 99% effective at preventing against cervical cancer and the pre-cancers associated with it. It can also protect against other genital cancers and anal cancer caused by the HPV virus.

HPV Gardasil 9 vaccine covers 9 different HPV types and can be given to anyone over the age of 9 years old.

Who should get the HPV vaccine?

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee recommends :

  • A single dose of the vaccine to be given between the age 9-24 year old
  • Two doses to be given over age of 24 year old at 0 and 6-12 months
  • Three doses regardless of your age dependent on any medical conditions that would make your body immunocompromised – please discuss with your GP.

If you are a woman undergoing any treatments for cervical lesions, the recommendation is:

HPV 9 Gardasil can be given to previously unvaccinated women under the age of 45 years old with both CIN1 and CIN2

Who should NOT get the HPV vaccine?

  • If you suffer from any anaphylaxis reaction to any of the vaccine constituents.
  • If you have any illness with a fever, please delay till you are well.
  • If you are pregnant, delay vaccination until completion of pregnancy.
